Choices

Choices
annoying needles
drawing blood –
or acupuncture for the soul?

How long can one waffle
shall it be this
will it be that
can it be both?

Shall I put this
in more poetic form
or do I wish to make a clear statement
and fine stringing be damned?

Is life really only about
choices?
can we not just let things happen?
I choose now, not to think about it

Of course,  making no choice
is a choice

Soon some choices will be
gone with the wind

But, there’s always tomorrow

My choice.

    Very nice, Jackie.

“Of course, making no choice / is a choice” – this is very essential. I suppose most of our choices are made unconsciously. Like the first stanza particularly.
Btw now I have learned that “waffle” doesn’t only mean “batter- or dough-based cake” but also “to waffle” : ) Nice expression!

The first stanza, was originally a micropoem which I expanded into the full poem. I think you’re right; many of our choices are subconscious. Thanks for the read and comment, Martin!

I love the way you have unpacked choices here – we really are stuck in a Catch 22 – love the dilemma you unravel

hehe…we can make the choice to just let things happen…smiles…and maybe when it comes to writing poetry, it’s good to listen more to the heart and really just let it flow..miro did this as well when he painted…in the first go..then he says he thought hard…but first..flow..

  9. 1emeraldcity says:

Whew! Well that assuages my guilt over choices…in poetry anyway. Thanks, Claudia! tee hee…

  10. brian miller says:

true that…no choice is still a choice…and i like waffles….much better than pancakes…oh sorry, no lunch yet…and in the end it is your choice…cant make it for you…so tomorrow it is…smiles.

  11. Very true…no choice, is still a choice. Very, very nice!

  12. 1emeraldcity says:

hee heee….that should be your most difficult choice, Bri…pancakes or waffles. Cheers!

  13. hedgewitch says:

Sometimes choosing not to choose is the best choice, if you can follow that. ;_) I like the third stanza a lot–sometimes we so overthink what we’re writing, overwrite what we’re thinking. Enjoyed it, Jackie.

    • 1emeraldcity says:

Happy you like this piece, Hedge…and I kinda like that stanza myself cuz I’m letting myself off the hook..lol. Thanks much for the read and comment. Glad you enjoyed!

  14. Sometimes its good, sometimes its not. And getting up for tomorrow is also a choice ~

  16. Chazinator says:

When do we choose and why, I wonder. No doubt, putting it off is perhaps the most common choice of many, most of the time. Why so difficult? Because with choice comes that resonsibility to carry thru, a promise to oneself or others or both. But choices, really, come very rarely, since we are educated in knowing what to do and when, so we livenon automatic, so to speak. But choices come when life breaks down and we must once again affirm our beliefs, take on the responsibility to be whonwe are… or not. Your poem gets to the nub of the matter, and makes it clear what’s at stake.

  17. punnypalaver says:

Love that choice to procrastinate. I like to think I leave things to fate when really I choose not to choose. Beautiful poem–”fine stringing” indeed!

  18. 1emeraldcity says:

You certainly made choice a study in human behavior, Chazzy…and well put, at that. I like the notion that we are “educated in knowing what to do and living on automatic” This is so true. And yes, choice is certainly a responsibility to be who we are! Thanks so much for this very thoughtful read and comment! I always appreciate your words :)

  19. ah … decisions, decisions, nice write :)

  20. Lindy Lee says:

Fine write on choice; you agree with Scarlet O’Hara.
Don’t think about it today. Think about it tomorrow.
As good a plan as any, just supposing…
