Trending

What’s trending?
I’ll tell you what’s trending
Trending is

Annoyed?
So am I
Who decides what’s trending

Is it the smart  young statistician
counting his way into
fame and fortune

Or the Madison Avenue
account exec
“Trust me” he says…”I’m in Advertising”

What’s trending?
Certainly not war, famine, greed
Boring staples

How about chocolate covered hissing cockroaches
from Madagascar
That could be trending

Or bottled water
from Gaza
Oh, no, who would have the rights..?

All fodder for trending
Smart talk for your next
cocktail party

Trending.

YES – that is it exactly – oh I most wholeheartedly agree – so much mindless waffle trends – dont we care anymore – brilliant write

  2. bajanpoet says:

that’s so poignant. The things that should trend don’t and the things that do…. *siiiiigh*

  3. 1emeraldcity says:

Well, you got it, pardner! Who the dang decides these things for us? Thanks so much for your read and comment :) )

  4. jmbhatt says:

Woha!!! I read the angst, the boiling temper! Rightly aimed & fired. Who says poetry is passive?

  5. peterwilkin says:

Lol ~ hope you got it all off your chest with this one, Jacquie? Humorous yet poignant. Like you say, who gives a shit what’s trending when there are so many heartbreaking issues on all our doorsteps. Definitely a poem that needed to be written &, as always, wonderfully crafted to make your point.

  6. PoetJanstie says:

Well said, Fu. And well written too. I so ‘dig’ your mood in this one; it’s so like me, when I need a rant. Cockroaches in Madagascar and bottled water in Gaza are such relevant irrelevances, if you know what I mean. Well done, my lovely.

    • 1emeraldcity says:

Yay! Had a feeling you might be sympatico with this one. Yup, I do know what you mean by the relevant irrelevancies.. Thanks so much John, for the read and encouraging words. Mwah!

  7. montygrant says:

Jackie, I sometimes look at what’s trending and before I get to the third item on the list I am often disgusted. I’m totally with you on this one! Trending: honor, integrity, kindness, forgiveness, clarity, generosity, sacrifice, love…..I could go on<3

  8. I like the Trending idea- I thought it was a tally of what people were searching – a more truthful measure of what people are interested in. How many of the Top Ten are vapid and inane? Great poem.

    • 1emeraldcity says:

Advertising and Public Relations have made trending a business, and I’m not so sure it is, in fact, a “more truthful measure of what people are interested in” because it changes so rapdily, and our culture loses interest quickly as one does in fads. Most of the trendy subjects, to me, are inane, ergo the poem. Glad you liked the piece, and thanks very much for the read and comment!

  9. poemblaze says:

Funny! Goats, asphalt and formica are trending. ;-)

  10. Ruth says:

Hate that word, and the many mindless bits of new-speak that have one wondering: what is that? But, I love your poem, and would love to see more trendings in this direction. :)

  11. brian miller says:

trending…is it really or is there some tweaking going on behind the scenes…to make wht they think is important on the fore front? i do find it rahter funny some times to see what is trending…and how far from it i am…

    • 1emeraldcity says:

Well, yeah…and I think it’s Madison Avenue, their clients and a little public relations…all working together to get the public’s attention, subtly and not so subtly. Thanks for read and comment, Brian :) )

  12. Great poem.

Yeah, it can be annoying to see the shallow stuff take precedence but as long as you’ve got down what matters, it’s all good. And even if you get one person on side, that’s a success.

There’s always good, even in all of the bad.

  13. zongrik says:

things that are trending are also trivial. people wonder “WHY IS THIS TRENDING?” or why is that trending this and that should be, they are more important, but the fact is that trending is trivial…so there

    pportunity on mars

  14. ayala says:

    A brilliant write, Jackie :)

  15. cloudfactor5 says:

I can only say Tiger Woods is as close as I get to Trending. And he shares common traits with the best poets I’ve been reading on these blogs, experience and perseverance, but then again I’m only a blip at the end of the media circus! Poem On!

  16. dreamersteve says:

love this “How about chocolate covered hissing cockroaches
    from Madagascar
That could be trending” kick their butts this was refreshing Jackie you’ve done it again..Poet Girl..

  17. Roxy says:

I always wondered how the decision was made..hmmm…I think your poem is trending…

  18. Steve King says:

I guess it’s all a numbers game! But who gets to really translate the ideas into the cipher? I like the idea of grappling with the real, right-now world in poetry. This is a strong, much needed write. Nice work.

  19. claudia says:

ha nice…i love the chocolate covered hissing cockroaches
from Madagascar… all the trends change so quickly and it must always be special and more special and sometimes really gets weird…you captured that well jackie

  20. 1emeraldcity says:

,,,,and another one on my side! The hissing cockroaches, btw, are for real…I added the chocolate.. but you see how weird this can get. Thanks for the read and comment, Claudia!

  21. Louise says:

lol….hissing cockroaches?? Yikes! And following trends & fashions? Nah…not for poets, methinks ;)

  22. 1emeraldcity says:

Hi, Louise! The hissing cockroaches from Madagascar are real…I only added the chocolate for mischief! As for following trends for fashion or anything else…mostly it’s a waste of time…but anything is grist for the poet’s mill, no?

  23. Chazinator says:

I think these buzzwords are annoying too. What is sad is how many people believe reality is what is is trending or that they can control popular opinion by creating the next trending topic or fashion. I’m glad you picked on this one, since we need more poetry about the silly words and concepts that mean nothing. Poets are the shepherds of the language!

  24. chris says:

You nailed it! I never ‘got’ the fascination with trending topics. I wish I could turn them off on Twitter but since that’s not an option, I switched it to what’s trending inJapan. Now I just see some lovely characters that I can’t understand. Now, if I could just do that with all advertising…
