Friday Night in Gotham

Near five of the hour
sun smiles obliquely
hinting at coming wildness

Grey highrisers blush
crimsoning
at thoughts of pent-up, penthouse parties

Celtic pubs tune up
red-cheeked with ale
sharpening darts

Beer-battered fresh fish fry
malt vinegar, coarse salt
wrapped in stale news

Outdoor cafes
emulating Old World mores
metrosexuals competing with supermodels

Genuine jazz jive
screaming crazy quilt notes
through Times Square dives

Old mellow loves
new exciting ones
one-night stands

Four in the morning
and the night rocks my world
with its banging, star-sequined stillness

Here you are, tantalising me with your world again! The more I read your words the more I want to visit NYC. What a wonderful vision you conjure up with this particular poem Jacquie ~how I want to roll in that ‘banging, star-sequined stillness.’ I can taste the magic … make up the spare bed, I’m on my way! :)

  2. 1emeraldcity says:

Oh, you! Noo Yawk is a great place to see…very enriching…but after your life in the country, you might feel personally assaulted by what you see, hear, taste, and smell. Come on along…I’ll make up the spare bed..just leave your dragons behind. LOL! Thanks for read and comment, mate!

  3. montygrant says:

What a picture you conjure Jackie!! Wish I was there, sounds exciting. Glad to see the fish and chips made it in there.:)

    • 1emeraldcity says:

Hi, Monty! It is exciting! You wish you were here, and I wish I were in London town once more! Yeah…I took a little poetic license…have yet to find a pub or restaurant where they serve the fish and chips in newspaper. I found that only in London and enviorns. Thanks much for the read and comment! Have a lovely weekend :) )

  4. marousia says:

This is so vivid – I stepped right inside this one – you took me to your beloved city – thank you for the invitation

    • 1emeraldcity says:

This is my Gotham…my love/hate with this city…that’s in me blood, girl! It’s a trip…almost every day! Gratitude for your read and comment, my sweet friend!

  5. Luke Prater says:

Very solid – the tercet structure works well for me. Your anthropomorphism of the sun is nicely original – smiling obliquely…. fine piece

  6. brian miller says:

delicious…you bring your world to life int eh textures of this…the buildings. the music. the food. (and now i am hungry) then whisk it away in your close~the night rocks my world
with its banging, star-sequined stillness…really well done ma’am

    • 1emeraldcity says:

Hi Brian! Yeah, welcome to my town. This crazy burg has been mine all my life..it’s in my blood, heart and soul…don’t think I could ever leave it permanently. But I do like to get away from the noise and crowds…I do that mostly by closing the shutters and turning on some soothing Brahms or Bach…then out again into the slamming concrete and glass. It’s an addiction! Thanks much for the read and comment!

  7. The Linnet says:

Oh how well you capture it! ~ I can almost taste that never ending buzz of the Manhattan streets.
I want to be drinking in the company of good friends in one of those celtic pubs, before wandering home, only stopping for some vinger infused chips! Or supping refill coffee eating bagels with blueberry jelly in a cafe.. Sigh.. I would love to come visit again one day! Thanks for this poetic visit :)

    • 1emeraldcity says:

Hi,Abi! There is nothing…but nothing like New York..and you’re right there is an unending buzz in the streets at all hours. It’s an exciting town with so much to see..and yes it certainly warrants another visit from you. Hope you can make it across the Pond again! Thanks so much for the read and comment!

  8. Steve E says:

Again…I am transported to right THERE! Even the smells are real for me, the food, the spilt booze and beer, the sweat of the heated peeps..and then the loudness of the 4 AM banging of the starry, quiet, night…OH, see what you have evoked here for me???
    PEACE!

    • 1emeraldcity says:

LOL… There’s no peace, friend…it’s all noise, fun, blasting humanity…all the way. And either you join ‘em or you take something to sleep it away. Thanks for dropping by and commenting. Much appreciated! PAX!

  9. One of my favorite three cities – never bored there. It’s always an adrenaline rush and oddly feel “at home” but at the same time nostalgic when I’m there. Always imagining I’m walking with the celebrated dead. It’s weird and wonderful. All captured here, well done.

  10. 1emeraldcity says:

Quite a town, my town…how can anyone be bored here…woot woot! Yeah, there is that familiar at home feeling…if you allow yourself…and celebrated ghosts all around accompanying you. Happy you capture those feelings during your visits, Gay. Come again; come often. Thanks much for your visit and right-on comment!

  11. chris says:

Such excitement! I’m hungry for some of that fish. It all sounds so fun, but I have to admit, it’s that four in the morning stillness that I like best.

    • 1emeraldcity says:

Yeah, Friday night frish fry in pub is great! And that four in the morning stillness is when I feel the city is mine. Thanks much for stopping by and for the comment!

  12. Great imagery, so vivid and alive.

And I just love the closing stanza. Great work with this.

  13. ayala says:

Love the textures in this…and these lines…Four in the morning
and the night rocks my world
    with its banging, star-sequined stillness….great :)

  14. So much for the senses to enjoy here! I love the chaos of it.

  15. libithina says:

I was rght there!! tasting those ‘beer battered fresh fish’ lashings of ‘vinegar’ listening to ‘live jazz’ ’till ‘four’ in the morning – Ohh Jacquie thankyou so much :) – this just how I imagine New York to be a place of vibrancy, character and colour – Hugs You Lib x x

    • 1emeraldcity says:

If you were here, we would paint the town red, orange and purple! You’d love it…for a while. Hope all’s well, Lib dear. Thanks so much for the visit and comments, and for all your kind support! Hugs..:)))) x

  16. tashtoo says:

May sound silly…but after midnight, a city even smells different…at four AM…it’s a whole other world. Though I have never been (YET!) this makes me want to take a huge bite out of the apple…as long as I can keep my hay wagon nearby! ;) Awesome write!

    • 1emeraldcity says:

Take that bite! I promise you’ll not regret it. And of course keep the hay wagon nearby…you’ll need it after a visit to Gotham. I’ll spread the red carpet for you! Thanks so much for the visit and comment, Tash!

  17. hedgewitch says:

It’s all yours, jackie–but you do make it sound delicious here–especially the little vignettes, I think of place and people, food and drink, with a rousing finish. I hate cities, but I did really love this poem.

  18. dawndeluca says:

I loved every second of this electric night- I love it when nights like these end on a positive note. Your last stanza confirms this. Excellent write!

  19. myearthgirl says:

there’s a rhythm here, a cadence, the pulse of the city and of the night, and it drew me in and I had to follow the beat all the way to 4 a.m. thank you for this, jackie x

    • 1emeraldcity says:

There is nothing like the rhythem and music of Gotham. And I’m so happy to have drawn you in, at least for a while. Thanks so much for the read and comment, Angie!

  20. Oh I really like this! “Grey highrisers blush
crimsoning” I’ve seen that. And “with its banging, star-sequined stillness” rocks mine too.

  21. Evelyn says:

    LOVE this!
    incredible, those last lines…also liked
    “sun smiles obliquely
    hinting at coming wildness”
    woot!

  22. Eva Von Pelt says:

Oh, you’ve just made me feel like home! I could hear, smell, and taste a fun night in the city. Love it!
