Ignorance

The mutant Janus
two backs, no front

Rusting chains
dipped in sludge

Never a question
always exclamations

Stunted stumps
no growth

A gravestone inscription
“Refused To Know”

Grey wash water
The color that cannot find the rainbow

Ignorance

This was wonderful – and you use great examples to make your point. Very inventive and damned necessary! Thanks.

  2. ayala says:

I agree some great examples to drive your point home. I hate ignorance :)

    • 1emeraldcity says:

Odd, I can put up with genuine stupidity…after all, that can’t be helped…But ignorance is not stupidity…it’s just a refusal to think, to know. Thanks so much for the read and comment!

  3. jmbhatt says:

Who else but you jackie can write on something as insipid as “ignorance” in such poetic manner!! All the nuances have come through, vividly.

There’s nothing like anger, irritation, annoyance…to act as a motivator when it comes to writing about negativity. It’s part of our lives and needs recognition as well as the beautiful aspects of life. I thank you, J, for your comment about the poem and for your generosity as well. :) )

  4. Ben Miller says:

Solid and to the point. This is such an enormous world problem and I think you distilled it down to its essence. I was going to call a specific phrase or line that captured that essence, but really every word you use paints that picture of not just someone who doesn’t know but doesn’t want and steadfastly refuses to know. The heart of ignorance!

  5. PoppySilver says:

Oh wow! Poignantly delivered! Ignorance is not an easy topic to write about but you have executed this with upmost meaning and insight! Profound work, enjoyed! :)

  6. Oh, Jackie! Ignorance kills me! Thank you for this masterpiece! ♥ :D

    ‘A gravestone inscription
“Refused To Know” – so brilliantly powered -
an ignorance in – ‘Grey wash water
The color that cannot find the rainbow’ – Oh that can’t find find a rainbow, superb!
Oh Jacquie this is so richly potent and descriptive
and in so few brilliantly crafted words.
It’s so sad and such a shame that so
much ignorance thrives – such a waste – but then I suppose
they are too ignorant to know –
    Hugs You Lib x x

  17. 1emeraldcity says:

One of the most cruel and crushing things in the world–you do it justice here, jackie. Love that mutant Janus phrase.

  19. 1emeraldcity says:

Cruel and crushing it is…ignorance is an abortion to creativity, fair judgments, and true democracy. Thanks much for your comment, Hedge!

  20. Steve King says:

Ignorance–the common presence behind most evil. A powerful reminder at work here…and so focused and compact. Very fine work.

  21. Great, powerful imagery contributing to a brilliant take on an established subject.

    As always, a great read.

  22. Ravenblack says:

Ignorance the ultimate inhibitor of all things that could florish into beauty. It kills, so it’s appropriate the lines of the gravestone “Refuse to Know” and grey waters that can’t reflect anything much less make rainbows. Well done on portraying “Ignorance”.

  23. ayala says:

    Still love it.

  24. Louise says:

Clever poem, J…ignorance is so like grey wash water…ugh …great description! :)

oh heck..i don’t want a grave stone inscription like that…i really have a hard time with ignorant people.. i think we should be open and never stop learning…well penned jackie

  27. Gay says:

The only thing missing is indolence – as well as the stubbornness you mention. It’s pulling the globe to polarization and leaving no room for men of vision and understanding to compromise. The bane of our time! Well said.

    • 1emeraldcity says:

Pleased you connected to this piece, Gay! Ignorance is the bane of our time…as well as past times..We do not learn. Thanks much for the read and right-on comment!
