Cool breezes
flirt with my hair
tendrils dance
with windblown leaves
Summer trembles
sighting Autumn’s cool indifference
to yellow-orange heat
painting palates of amber, fiery crimson
Crows, robins, cardinals
look to their feathery luggage
their second southern homes
practicing flight signals
Fields of yellow daisies, red poppies
smiling at an aging sun
ready to fold
tired petals
You can see if you really look
that certain shaft of golden light
in burnished mid afternoon
not dappling through Summer’s lazy leaves
But a long, slow sophisticated wink
of amber motes
owning that space
in the lace of sleepy greenings
Autumn waiting
assured
Summer trembling.
Who else could have calmly collected all colors of summer, its sounds & texture and presented them so exquisitely? Jackie your word-art prevails effortlessly. Wonderful read indeed.
Wow! That was a fast response. Dressing for an 11:30 appointment, I looked outside my window, and the words were there falling into my lap…Jyoti…thank you so very much for your words!

As for me, that melancholy season may still wait for a while … in the meantime I delight in basking in your colourful imagery of imminent decay : )
Decay…perhaps…but you know…what goes around, comes around. Glad you like it, Martin! Thanks so much

Can’t come soon enough for me–we are baked into oblivion here…the sense of continuity and rhythm in the natural world you give in this is gracefully done, jackie. I especially love: “…The crow, the robin, the cardinal/ look to their feathered luggage…” and the wink at the close.
Yes,…why we call it the Baked Apple, here in NY… Pleased you like this one, Hedge.. Thanks so much for stopping by and for your lovely compliment!
ah i love it…autumn is my fav season…and already i feel her cool fingers on my shoulders….smooth madam…love the imagery in it as well…smiles.
Hey, Brian! this was an unexpected one…just looked out my window while dressing for an appointment this morning, and there it was…words…just flying at me…so I caught some of them…and here we are. Glad you like it! Thanks for dropping by!
I especially enjoy how you’ve used colors and verb choices to bring us with you into this moment of late summer. Nicely done.

Just like the summer I wish I could have. Without the rain and stuff.
As always, great work.
Some day…maybe sooner than you think, man will be able to manipulate the weather more to our liking. Not sure I want to see that. Thanks Sky…for the read an comment! Always appreciated
The colors seem to build more than a picture, more of a feeling, an anticipation – always waiting for that roll into the next season. Makes us here in Texas jealous, of course, we are stuck these years in an endless summer with little relief except in January ..when it cools to everyone else’s spring/autumn. Lovely piece.
One of the things I love about New York and the Northeast is that anticipation of season change…perhaps this also lends to the sometimes held notion of the mercurial nature of New Yorkers…but who cares…it’s a pleasure to look forward to these changes…Thanks so much, Gay for the read and comment!
This is just lovely, Jacquie. You’ve caught that subtle just about to change few moments very well. “Feathery luggage”- sweet.
Aw, thank you, dear friend…so pleased you like ! {{hugs}}
